Shipments of industrial-class 3D printers (priced above $100,000) were up by more than 8% in Q3 2019 compared with the same period the previous year, according to market intelligence from Context (London). This key sector, which accounted for almost 70% of all 3D printer revenues for the period, saw even more impressive shipment growth of 12% on a trailing 12-month basis.“The increase came as a surprise, given the headwinds many vendors reported in the second half of the year, such as reduced demand from the struggling automotive sector, sluggish European economies and a generally weak global industrial manufacturing market,” said Chris Connery, VP Global Analysis and Research at Context. In the industrial polymer 3D printer market, HP (now number two in global shipments) saw excellent grow...

Powder metallurgy was practiced long before ancient artisans learned to melt and cast iron. Egyptians made iron tools using PM techniques back in  3,000 B.C. The ancient Incans made jewelry and artifacts using precious metal powders. The first modern PM product were the tungsten filaments for electric light bulbs developed in the early 1900s. These were followed by tungsten-carbide cutting tools and self-lubricating bearings in the 1930s; automobile parts in the ’60s and ’70s; aircraft turbine engine parts, powder-forged connecting rods, and metal-injection-molding (MIM) in the ’80s; warm...

What is additive manufacturing and why is it important? There are several types of additive manufacturing and many applications, but the main principle is commonly known as 3D printing. This is where layers upon layers of material are stacked and fused on top of each other to form a product, and controlled digitally by 3D software.Pharmaceuticals are normally produced through several basic processes such as tableting, or tablet compression, where powders are compressed into a more solid tablet form. These processes offer many disadvantages which can be avoided through the use of additive manufa...
