Shipments of industrial-class 3D printers (priced above $100,000) were up by more than 8% in Q3 2019 compared with the same period the previous year, according to market intelligence from Context (London). This key sector, which accounted for almost 70% of all 3D printer revenues for the period, saw even more impressive shipment growth of 12% on a trailing 12-month basis.“The increase came as a surprise, given the headwinds many vendors reported in the second half of the year, such as reduced demand from the struggling automotive sector, sluggish European economies and a generally weak global industrial manufacturing market,” said Chris Connery, VP Global Analysis and Research at Context. In the industrial polymer 3D printer market, HP (now number two in global shipments) saw excellent grow...

Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is now increasingly used in automotive, aerospace and tooling industries. As the acceptance deepens, we are also seeing a steady penetration into the oil & gas industry. 3D printing in the oil & gas industry is estimated by some reports to reach $1.5 billion by 2025.

Additive manufacturing aligns with the needs of the automotive industry, driving advances in vehicle design. Serial production is a reality today in additive manufacturing (or 3-D printing) as the technologies under this umbrella have advanced to a point where end-use parts can be made of both metal and plastic materials, ready to be put to use in real-world environments. The automotive industry has been a major adopter, with automotive OEMs among the first to install 3-D printers -- some 30 years ago, in fact, Ford purchased the third 3-D printer ever made.
